Life in Peace or in Pieces

One word, two meanings, free choice

Watch On YouTube Listen to Podcast

Life in peace or in pieces

Life is like a game, its destination is peace or pieces.

So much is out of our hands, out of our control.

To choose peace is calming, it’s freeing.

To choose pieces creates chaos and tension.

All of the pieces we need are available to us

right here and now.

In choosing peace we settle into the game

we call life.

How do I know which piece/peace I am in?

Whichever peace/piece you are choosing is choosing you right back.

Your breath is the answer. One who is in peace their breath reaches deep into the darkest crevices of the lungs with an ease unlike no other. The breath is deep, it is purposeful, it is full and content. A smile brews naturally in the heart and on the face of such an individual.

Where piece or pieces is your residence the breath will mimic the same. Scattered, shallow, irregular, forced to go deep into the lungs, uneasy pressure and where smiling is an afterthought not a natural side effect.

Now you have the answer of how to freely move from piece to peace. Yet, how many of us are willing to make the switch? There’s an eerie comfort in the discomfort of pieces. It’s a known variable, it’s been experienced in the body many times. What if the body gets bored with the comfort of peace? What if peace brings routine and nothing else? Will that life even be one worth experiencing?

Decisions decisions. Which one will you choose? The one explained in the mind? Or the one that is experienced as faith and as healing in the heart and the body?

Pranayama: Breath work that works

“Prana” refers to a living energy in Sanskrit, “Yama” refers to the God of death. Or “Prana” meaning breath/energy/life and “Ayama” means expansion. How ever you break Pranayama down to correct the meaning it is still a dance between that which moves us from life on inhaling and that which creates death on exhaling. Inhale peace, exhale pieces.

In the practice of pranayama one is exercising the lungs, the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles to move in dynamic flow of inhalation and exhalation. Energy accumulates when the breath is held and dissipates when full exhalation is achieved. The rhythmic pause between life and death.

Isn’t it fascinating that the one thing our body does naturally to keep us alive (since birth) is the one bodily activity we can control (to some extent) luckily the lungs don’t require us to think breath to breathe. It just does.

Somewhere from first breath to now we got in the way of our peace. The natural rhythm of our breath altered, scattered and betrayed us. Leaving us in pieces. Our inability to process a nice large breath of healthy oxygen has in some way, shape or form affected our current health be it emotionally, mentally, physically or a combination of the three.

When emotionally strained, breathe

When mentally tensioned, breathe

When physically pressured, breathe

Are you ready to take back some control of peace in your life?

If so, begin moving your lungs towards breath work. Begin a discipline at home with yourself and your lungs. Close your eyes, centre and align your spine. Sit straight. First, become aware of your breath pattern. Notice the depth, the ease or discomfort, can you breathe with your mouth closed? How are your nasal airways? Just be an observer, get to know yourself. Your breath patterns will teach you a lot about you and your current habits.

Up until 2012 I was a mouth breather, it was only on practicing and learning about pranayama through a Yoga DVD (Shilpa Shetty’s) that I became self aware. We don’t know what we don’t know.

After monitoring and observing into the self, begin a gentle breath exercise in which you rhythmically inhale through your nose. Become aware. What is this showing you about yourself? Notice where your mind moves to when you flow into your practice.

If you really wish to heal then be ready and willing to get to know yourself deeper. Remember oxygen is a healing agent for the body which is FREE. Your heart and every organ, tissue and cell needs oxygen to function and survive. This isn’t an invitation to gadget up and go to your nearest oxygen chamber – although you can, life is a series of free choices after all. This is about real healing happening from real SELF awareness.

The truth of you, sits in the heart of you. Never give up your own access to you. The answer of your pieces is resting right there in your own lungs.

Remember each body is unique, each individual carries their own melody and body rhythm. To tune into your lung health get to know your own lungs. Once you have self assessed -if the heart calls – dial in for a teacher, guide, healer to help move you further through any blocks. The ultimate goal is that the lungs open so your blood can carry more oxygen to the heart. The heart receives this oxygen and heals and grows stronger. The heart is the pump so it also provides oxygenated blood to the whole of the body.

This is life. Receiving and Giving, Giving and Receiving. The moment you take your first breath and expel out carbon dioxide there are plants and trees blessing you for that first exhaled breath.

The choice is yours, a life in peace or in pieces?
